THE BUCHANAN CLAN

Membership of the Buchanan Society is restricted by Royal Charter to those with the surnames Buchanan, McAuslan, McWattie and Risk. Many other families, or septs, may be entitled to enjoy the privilege of wearing the various Buchanan Tartans.

The original tartan has been described as comprising the following colours measured in inches and using the natural dyes shown:

½ Azure - Elder with Broom and Alum

8 Green - Iris leaf or Whin bark

½ Black - Alder bark or common Sloe

2 Yellow - Crab Apple or Elm Tree

½ Black - Alder bark or common Sloe

2 Yellow - Crab Apple or Elm Tree

½ Black - Alder bark or common Sloe

1 Azure - Elder with Broom and Alum

½ Black - Alder bark or common Sloe

8 Red - Rock Lichen or Blaeberry

1 White - Natural wool

There are now a number of Buchanan tartans of different shades, including the illustrated Weathered (Vegetable Dye), Hunting, Ancient and Modern.
